It helped that my first playthrough was as a guy - while the male!Shepard voice isn't bad, it's simply not as good as the female one, so playing it first meant I didn't know this.

I really wish I'd played a male game first, because it's so distracting. I keep comparing him to Jen Hale as I play. I will say though, he has a cool, commanding sounding voice, I would just like a bit more expression when he talks. Then again, I'm playing full out renegade with him, so maybe that's why it's not so expressive.
