I've been reading through some of the fanstastic challenge entries over on kfm and while some of them are amazingly excellent, there are some that aren't so excellent, although none are god awful, mind numbingly, tear your hair out horrible.
I'm torn, because there are a few that I'd like to leave some constructive criticism for, but I know that if I do that (especially to one story in particular), the inevitable firestorm will ensue.
Here's the thing. If I leave reviews of only the fics that I like without leaving comments about the fics that I think have problems, I feel like I'm selling out... or letting the people that think it's a heinous offense to tell someone that their story isn't working for them win, and that just pisses me off.
On the other hand, I'm tired, and I don't really feel like dealing with the inevitable "omg... you're so mean, your comments aren't helpful because they are based on your biased perceptions, it's inappropriate to tell people that their characterization is off... blah, blah, blah." Plus, I've kicked up enough trouble over there already, and I always feel bad when the mods have to jump in and deal with this kind of stupid shit.
I think I may just quit reviewing stories entirely. Or maybe I'll just read and review people that I know I'll like.
I don't know. I need to think about this some more.
