Just beat the game for the first time today, as a light side female consular. I really loved it, but in many ways it was so incredibly flawed.
Warning... Spoilers Below...
Some of the things I really liked:
Kreia
I thought Kreia was an absolutely fabulous character. As a mysterious, shady, and morally ambiguous character, she rocked, and some of the best game conversations come from her. My absolute favorite Kreia moment was the whole discussion about the consequences of random acts of kindness. Also interesting is how she views the Force as a curse to the people who wield it, which given the nature of the light and dark side, has a lot of truth to it.
Realistic Consequences
I really loved how this game showed the fallout of Revan and Malak’s war and Exar Kun’s war. The way people hate and distrust the Jedi is probably how it would be given the current history in the game. I also love how the game doesn’t assume that the Jedi were right in dragging their feet during the Mandalorian wars, and how you can play the Exile as completely unapologetic, but still be a light sider.
The Exile
The Exile, as person who is so wounded from making the tough and necessary decisions during a war that they cut themselves off from society and the Force, is such an interesting character. I also loved how powerful the Exile got in relation to everyone else, and it was how I imagined a powerful Jedi would be. By the end, I was killing entire rooms of people before they could even attack me (stasis field + force storm = a lot of dead people).
Atton
I thought he was a great character, and his big secret is pretty damn nasty. I felt bad for him, even after I found out he killed Jedi, until I got the “I killed her because I loved her” line, which is just crazy and really makes you wonder about him. Is he a sadistic monster or a wounded war veteran? He gets all the best lines in the game, and he kind of reminded me of a little brother (even without his big secret, he’s simply not my type).
Other Npc’s
I really enjoyed the bits where the game forces you to play people other than the Exile. It is a cool way to tell the story, as well as a bit of a challenge since the other players aren’t really as powerful as the Exile.
Cool Robes
Finally! These are so much better than the ass ugly ones from the first game. Hopefully next time, they will give us better underwear though.
Some things I didn’t like:
The Ending
The last quarter of the game seemed like it was incomplete and rushed. One minute I’m talking to Carth, and the next I’m headed to some planet and I don’t know why. Hell, I didn’t know I was on Malachor until I looked at the map. From reading the kotorfanfic message boards, I realized that I missed key pieces of background, but I’m not sure how that happened (I suspect that I didn’t get enough influence with the right people). This is just poor game design, and I couldn’t help but feel that if the designers had stuck to their original release date for both the xbox and pc, the game would have been so much better.
Disciple
I don’t know why, but this guy totally creeps me out. I think it might be the weird hair and the overbite coupled with his almost blind worship of you. I much preferred Atton (even though that guy has some serious issues) to him, although to be honest, I really wasn’t hot about romancing either of them. Even if Atton didn’t have his big secret, he’s just too doofy for my tastes, and the Disciple is too lapdogish for me.
Mandalore’s Helm
Why the hell couldn’t we see Canderous’ face? That was just annoying.
Anyway, I’m going to try playing as a male guardian next. I’m going to try to be evil, although I suspect that the best I’m going to be able to manage is neutral. I just don’t have the heart to go full on evil. It just makes me feel too guilty, even though it's only a game (I know, I suck).
