So Bethesda bought the rights to the best computer rpg of all time, Fallout, and finally after years and years Fallout 3 is in development and slated for a fall 2008 release.

They even have a trailer! There's actually a FAQ about the game here. Apparently unlike the first two games, this one is supposed to take place on the eastern cost of the United States.

I'm so freaking geeked. If there was one game that I could have picked to have a sequel for, it's Fallout (yes, even over Knights of the Old Republic). This is probably my all time favorite computer game although it might tie with Day of the Tentacle.

It had probably the best and most original character creation system that I've ever seen in an rpg, an amazingly original plot (I'm a sucker for post apocalyptic stories) and some completely kick ass visuals (I can still see the opening sequence for Fallout 1 in my head). Fallout 1 also had the most entertaining instruction manual ever with the hilarious Pip Boy cartoons.

I just hope that 1) this actually does get released and 2) it lives up to the first two games.

I think I'm going to have to go dig up my copies of the old games and play them again.

And now watch as Bethesda takes out everything good about the first two games and injects it with Morrowind/Oblivion.

Heh, yeah. Honestly that's my fear too. I'm not that big of a fan of Morrowind. I thought it was way too confusing and open ended to be compelling at all - plus the quest tracking system was the absolute worst design ever. I never even got close to finishing that game, instead just giving up in sheer frustration.

It would suck if they tried to make Fallout 3 in the same way. I'm just hoping that they realize why people loved the first two so much and don't fix what isn't broken.

I really kind of liked Morrowind, actually, although I've never finished Oblivion. Does Fallout 1 &2 play on Win XP? You're making me want to check it out.

I think my biggest problem with Morrowind (other than the totally shitty quest log system) was that it was kind of... lonely (that's the best way I can think of putting it). After playing games like Baulder's Gate 1 & 2 and Fallout, having no real npc's to interact with - I dunno, it just didn't work from me. The story was almost too open ended to really get into, although maybe that's just because I'm a lazy ass.

Fallout gives a lot of openendedness that Morrowind does but manages to keep the plot tight enough that you can follow it easily. The most awesome thing about the game is that you can play as a goody two shoes or a totally heartless bastard, a brilliant person, or a brute dumbass and it completely changes the interactions and dialogue with others in the game and the outcome of the people you meet. I actually managed to win the first game without firing a shot at the end boss. If your charisma is high enough, you can actually pick the right dialogue options to win.

I looked up to see if it would run in Win XP - apparently Fallout 2 runs great while some people have reported glitches with the first game (although some say it runs fine). If you decide to play - I'd definitely try to play them in order. The ending of the first one sets up the attitude of the second game so well.

I can't find my game disks because I think I loaned them to someone years ago. >< I think I'm going to have to buy them from Amazon - where bundled they run about 23 bucks.

It's an old game... but if you like dark, gritty games with a twisted sense of humor and a post apocalyptic fifties vibe story line, it's definitely worth checking out.

I felt the exact same way about Morrowind, and then I found a really, really well done mod (there are tons out there - I read in a lot of places that a mod that gives you a companion named Constance is really fun) here: http://lovkullen.net/Emma/Kateri.htm

Julan can be your buddy or your boyfriend depending on how you interact with him, and I found him to be awfully handy in tough fights. He's got his own little back story/drama too, so he's not just a packmule who can fire a bow. It's not perfect, of course, but it definitely makes it a less lonely, more enjoyable game.

Ooo that sounds rather cool. When I finish tooling around the old fallout games, I may try this.

Thanks for the heads up!

I just inhaled all the oxygen in the room with my gasp of shocked joy, and now I'm bouncing in my seat like a three year old! FO 1 and 2 take up two slots in my top five fave games, so if they do a third that's just as good... I might just weep.
Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease let them do it right - and please let it actually get done and released! It always boggled my mind that such an overwhelmingly popular game world was just allowed to sit in limbo. Again with the squeals and yays - this is awesome news!

Yeah that pretty much sums up how I feel. I'm bummed that it's not coming out until Fall 2008 - but hell... it's been what, like six or eight years since the last one. I'm just grateful it's in development at all.

If I could, I'd keep my fingers crossed until Fall 2008 roflmao.

I love Fallout. God, make this not suck.

I still have my Fallout 1 disk, I pulled it out a few weeks ago but resisted temptation to install it again cause it sucks me in and won't let me out.

It's sitting right next to my printer.
Dam you for reminding me! :p
